Daft Punk: Discovery Review
This album truly brings the idea of synthpop to life with each song. Not only does Daft Punk do a good job at making the music interesting, but also they make you feel every beat. Coming from the house music genre, Daft Punk took this route of synthpop, which they have successfully integrated into their music. Synthpop, is the music genre that developed out of the 1980’s with the synthesizer being the prominent instrument. The many different kinds of synthesis can be heard in the songs throughout the album, while also combined with other musical instruments. I believe what makes this album successful is the balance that Daft Punk finds in combining such different instruments. Every song is different, yet the elements behind every song become familiar as you progress through the album. However, I found myself always willing to listen to the next song to discover what emotions would be brought up during its duration. The very first track “One More Time,” probably one of the duo’s biggest hits, warrants me to want to celebrate and party. However, the track “Something About Us” brings me to think about past relationships with people, and just in general what I hold dear in my life. Nevertheless, the samples and ways in which every track is constructed successfully in terms of what emotions they are trying to convey. Ironically, Daft Punk describes this album as attempt to “reconnect with a playful, open-minded attitude associated with the discovery phase of childhood.” There is much truth to this statement, as I’ve described above, every track brings about a different emotion inside of you.
The history of how such music can come to be really is what should be emphasized in the success of Daft Punk. It’s not enough to just have these instruments to make music. It takes thought, recognition, and understanding of what you have at your disposal to make your music. As mentioned before, I believe this is where Daft Punk finds the balance. They not only used synthesizers to create their music, but they used samples, guitars, basses, and human voice. It’s the combination of these different tools, and Daft Punk’s overall musical genius to make this album a success. In the context of what the synthesizer is capable of, we can all see the result when implemented correctly. However, this way is not the only way the synthesizer can be used to make a successful album. There are a number of other bands and albums that use the synthesizer and other instruments to make their album successful. I fully recommend Discovery to anyone looking to expand his or her musical library. I honestly did not like the “technoish house music” genre until I listened to Daft Punk. This was my first album that I listened to by them, and I was not disappointed. I’m sure many fans of this genre have already purchased this album. However, for the people who have not listened to this album, I suggest you do so immediately. You will not be disappointed.
